Sneak Preview on Characterdesign

Have you ever wondered why the characters in games a pretty good-looking, smart or just super-badass? There's a simple reason and structuring behind it, and that's what I want to talk about. Characters, how they are made and why it's so easy to like them - or hate them.

Please think about some games you've played (or movies, if you never played any videogames, because it's pretty similar here). Think about games with characters. Most times, there's a hero, an enemy, somebody who might help you, some mean people who are playing tricks on you to disturb you.. oh, you see, the games you thought of might have that in common. One more thing they have in common is a goal. There's always something to accomplish, like finding a treasure or beating that mean guy who stole your princess. But why?
It's something about the human being, that wants to be challenged. We need something special to do. Of course you can make games without an ending where you can walk around without anything to do, but that would be boring at some point. (Please don't say something like: 'But in minecraft, there's no goal!' or something similar. You should beat some kinda dragon, you know? Or just get to the next level, like in Candy Crush.)
So back to our human being. Back to you. You might not tell other people, but deep inside we want to reach goals, and win against our enemies. In games you will play a hero most times, because it's easy to feel like that character. His or her goal will become yours, their enemies will become yours. That's why a hero is most times needed.
But why should there be an enemy? Well, have you ever played against yourself? After a while it gets boring, right? Games shouldn't bore you, they should be exciting. Otherwise no producer will make money with making games.
Then, there are a few other people who will likely appear in games. Some kind of supporter. Like that little fay in Zelda. It is someone who tells you about your story or what you have to do and it will help you sometimes when you can't see a way out of your problems in the game. This character is optional, though. Some games rather work with backflashes and movie sequences than another character. I have no opinion about which way is better, but these supporters can be a lot of trouble if your not playing that game for the first time. Like, you have a big lot of text to read again if you can't skip the info. So maybe the skipable movie sequences are better. I don't know. I usually don't play games more than once.
So you see, this is only a very little part of the characters in games, that are very common. Next time I will tell you more about it, I just wanted to give you a little sneak-peak on what will await you.
